WHY IS LITERACY IMPORTANT?

by Beatrice Abeti

Literacy is a means of preparing man for a social, civic and economic role, which goes beyond the limits of learning to read and write.

Indeed, it adds value

a person's life. It can play an important role in development at the individual, family and community level as well as at the level of nations, regions and the world at large.

First, Literacy_empowers individuals, families and communities to seize the health, educational, political, economic and cultural opportunities available to them.

Literacy of women and girls is also critically important to ensure gender inequality. Indeed, many women who have benefited from basic education and adult literacy classes say they feel a sense of personal autonomy. In fact, literacy is at the heart of education and, in particular, of education for all, which is centered on basic education.

Literacy helps people understand information taken out of context as well as oral and written language. It thus paves the way for further learning.

Putting literacy into practice can help individuals develop multiple skills such as:

🔸Staying healthy 🏃🏾and live longer 👨🏾‍ 👩🏽‍

🔸 Lifelong learning,

🔸 Having control over their reproductive behavior 🤰🏾🤱🏾,

🔸 Raising and educating healthy 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 children.

The importance of literacy therefore can not be underminded 📚!
